Perugia

PERUGIA - The city stands in the center of the region, with its five historic districts enclosed by Etruscan walls, enormous bastions formed by gigantic boulders, square and put together twenty-two centuries ago. They are still visible and almost intact. There are numerous historical monuments and squares that this city embodies, like Piazza Grande (Piazza IV Novembre) a superb monument complex that includes the Palazzo dei Priori, the Cathedral, and Fontana Maggiore, a Thirteenth Century fountain located in downtown Perugia. At the opposite end of Corso Vannucci you'll find famous panoramic gardens which were built on the foundations of the Rocca Paolina, a fortress built by Pope Paul III in 1540.
The ascents and stairways are usually quite steep, both dating back to the remotest ages and redesigned in more recent times. Near Perugia you can enjoy the panorama of Lake Trasimeno. With its surroundings, is perhaps the most characteristic and evocative of the territories around Perugia. Surrounded on three sides by rolling hills, this is an extraordinary location to visit. Its beaches, hotels, restaurants and hotels make it one of the best equipped areas of Perugia. Major villages around the lake are Tuoro, Magione, Passignano and Castiglione del Lago with the beautiful Leone fortress. The Trasimeno also boasts a major historical heritage, in fact in these areas are found traces of the famous ancient battle between Hannibal and the Romans. In these areas there are many quiet and scenic farmhouses near Perugia or a few kilometers from the center.
TRASIMENO LAKE PARK - this Park created in 1995 is a large protected area 13.000 ha large holding in its territory the town of Castiglione del Lago Magione, Panicale, Passignano and Tuoro on Trasimeno.
The lake is one of the biggest in Italy and its shores are ideal both for bathing and for fishing.
In the Trasimeno lake there are 3 nice islands: Polvese, Maggiore and Minore. Near the lake there are several etruscan and roman ruines. From Passignano you can take the boat to reach the Polvese island. A visit to the Rocca del Leone in Castiglion del lago is a must. From its towers you can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole lake.
